Attend and reflect on three creative/artistic events

Back to Research and Creative Activity Experiences

This requirement focuses on broadening your connection to creative modes of communication and expression, primarily through media other than the written word. In particular, this requirement aims to engage your imagination and broaden your cultural experience through exposure to oral, aural, and visual forms of expression. To some extent, we hope that the experience alone will affect you and enrich your heart, mind, and spirit, bringing you into contact with live performers and/or with visual forms of expression that you haven't previously encountered. Beyond this enrichment, we ask you to record impressions and responses to these individual events, and to reflect on and write about the ways in which you understand these experience as forms of cultural intervention -- to consider how artistic and creative representational practices can serve as platforms of social and political critique or visionary reimagination. Ideally, you will begin to see such artistic and creative forms as important means of fostering transformative ideas, values, and perspectives as we work toward a more diverse and inclusive society. Speculations about how such interventions might be used actively as part of your own leadership initiatives are also welcome.
